Pollack

This may seem like an odd problem, but I can't avoid catching small pollack. Has anybody any tips on baits that they won't take, or how to pick out the bigger pollack?

Replies:

1. If possible, try Lure-fishing for them.

A larger lure should sort out the bigger fish.

There's nothing in angling quite like having a fish take a retreived lure.

2. Around the S.West of England where I do most of my fishing, small pollack are harbour fish, mostly chasing whitebait. Around rocky outcrops you may catch them a tad heavier -  To 3lbs, if you're lucky. They tend to migrate to deeper water then.
Off a wreck in about 25mtrs you can expect anything from 3-20lbs, sometimes you`ll get nothing but small ones. Go to the next and you'll catch some decent ones.
I think, however, you`ll be hard pushed to catch many 5 pounders from the shore.
I'll bet you a pound to a thousand that your next 20 pollack from the shore will be mostly under 3lb!

Big pollack simply don't feed around the shoreline! The odd one of 7 or 8lbs may be caught, but that will be a loner!!

If you want a big pollack, forget the shore and any special bait. You'll have to jump in a boat and move into deeper water.
