Shock Leader

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Shock Leader: A length of heavier line or braid tied to the end of the mainline before the hooklink. A shock leader is designed to soak up the immense pressure exerted on the line during the cast when using a heavy weight or casting long distances. The general rule of thumb is for the leader to be 10-times the amount of weight used, i.e. a five ounce weight requires a fifty pound breaking strain shock leader. Use an amount so that when the rod is in a casting position, there are about six turns of the shock leader around the spool on the reel.
