Long Lining: Sea Fishing term used to describe a long line with 10-50 hooks attached to it - length of line depends on type of fish being targeted. Hooks are baited with either sand eels or small mackerel or sprat cut into strips. Fish caught by this method range from bottom-feeders such as skate and turbot through to swimming fish such as cod and bass. This is an old method of fishing and is not frequently used unless specifically targeting valuable species such as turbot, brill and bass. This form of fishing is basic and inexpensive and, although popular in the past, is rarely used in this day and age, except in certain areas like the Shambles Bank, the Adamant Shoal and Kidney Bank off Portland.
